"[This book] embodies the Buddhist wisdom about change, life, and the
world more than anything written after the events of that day."

TWO SITES FOR SORE EYES & EARS

When I'm feeling blue, there are two Websites, I have to admit, that can offer a pick-me-up with a single click.

One is EatLiver.com (subtitle, in crackpot English: Crazy Pictures of Insane Internet). It is just that: Bizarre photographs and graphics and arcana culled from trawling the Net.

The other is the 1920s Radio Network, out of Chesapeake, Virginia, offering songs from 1900 to 1950, 24 hours a day. Browse over to the site and you're transported to the Jazz Age.

THE VERY LAST ROLL OF KODACHROME...

Check out this piece on VanityFair.com about the very last roll of Kodachrome, shown frame by frame. The images were shot by Steve McCurry, of Magnum Photos--most famous for his National Geographic cover of an Afghan refugee girl (photographed on Kodachrome, of course).

OBAMA'S WORDS OF WISDOM -- IN CAIRO

“America does not presume to know what is best for everyone, just as we would not presume to pick the outcome of a peaceful election. But I do have an unyielding belief that all people yearn for certain things: the ability to speak your mind and have a say in how you are governed; confidence in the rule of law and the equal administration of justice; government that is transparent and doesn't steal from the people; the freedom to live as you choose. Those are not just American ideas, they are human rights, and that is why we will support them everywhere.”

--President Barack Obama
