Awards Season Begins

Come one, come all to the 31st annual W. Eugene Smith Memorial Fund grant-recipient ceremony, which provides $30,000 to a photographer working in the humanist tradition of Gene Smith, pioneer of the photo essay. A smaller fellowship grant will also be dispensed, along with the Howard Chapnick Grant, which goes to a photojournalism mentor, educator, scholar, manager, or innovator.

This year’s ceremony will take place on Wednesday, October 19, 6:30 pm, at New York City’s Asia Society, 725 Park Avenue (at 70th Street).

ALSO… The 2012 World Press Photo Contest organizers have kindly requested that I be the jury chair for next year's awards. I’m thrilled by the honor and daunted by the challenge.
